This would strengthen the confidence the Libyan people had in the government and people of Scotland when it decided to accept Megrahi's trial before Scottish courts, as announced by the Leader on March 2nd, 1999. He then stated clearly that Abdul- Basset Megrahi's extradition to the Scottish Government was a result of our confidence in the people of Scotland.

I would like also to personally thank our friends in the British Government who played an important role in attaining this cheerful end. I assert that the Libyan people will never forget the courageous stance on the part of the British and Scottish governments; that our friendship will be forever consolidated, and that the notorious past is now gone forever.

I would like also say to the families of the victims that Abdel-Basset Megrahi waived his right to appeal, however, this does in no way hide the fact that there are still lots of data, evidence and new facts confirming his innocence which will be proved one day.
